Art Therapy and Counseling, MS

The degree program uses self-reflection, a growth mindset and art making to support and challenge in preparation for employment, art therapy credentials and licensure as a counselor.
Continually meeting new requirements of the art therapy and counseling professions, the Master of Science in Art Therapy and Counseling through the School of Health Professions at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) provides you many opportunities:
  • Graduate in 22 months (5 continuous semesters).
  • Take face-to-face classes on campus as well as some hybrid or online options.
  • Practice skills with simulated / standardized patients — actors portraying real cases.
  • Increase your marketability by completing 3 internships, with 3 populations, in 3 settings.
  • Make the most of 24/7 access to a 2,000-square-foot art studio on campus in Norfolk, Virginia, exclusively for Art Therapy and Counseling students.

This rigorous curriculum is almost like a dual degree in Art Therapy and Counseling. In addition to reviewing admissions applications and transcripts, faculty members measure prospective students’ qualifications and readiness in these ways:
  • In-person admissions interview. Yes, we need to talk to you and engage with you in person on campus. 
  • Writing sample completed in real time. Strong writing skills remain more indicative of readiness than GRE scores or other measures. Candidates complete the writing sample while on campus for an admissions interview.
