Master of Laboratory Animal Science

Looking to take your career to the next level? The master’s degree in laboratory animal science from EVMS is designed for you, if:
1.  You already work with lab animals in one way or another and want to advance your career:
  • Medical or other lab animal research
  • Lab animal caretakers
  • Lab animal breeders and providers
  • Animal feed R&D, etc.
Or:
2.  You are seeking additional academic credentials, clout, and hands-on animal experience before applying to veterinary school.
This flexible, online program is designed for working professionals. The one-week campus residency component during the summer provides an intensive lab animal science internship that sets the program apart from other institutions.
You can choose either full-time or part-time study, depending on your time commitments and potential tuition help from an employer. You’ll complete 31 credits, beginning with a traditional academic year start date in August.
  • Full time: Graduate in 5 semesters over 2 years
  • Part time: Graduate in 10 semesters over 4 years
Required coursework includes:
  • Comparative anatomy and physiology
  • Applied biostatistics and research design
  • Diseases of lab animals 
  • Lab animal husbandry, care, and ethics
  • Anesthesia and surgery
  • Facility management
  • Biotechnology and diagnostic techniques
  • Lab animal behavior and behavioral management
  • Cryopreservation

Lab Animal Leadership, Usage, and Ethics

EVMS’s Master of Laboratory Animal Science adheres to these guiding principles:
  • Replacement: Use of alternative techniques or avoiding the use of animals altogether when possible.
  • Reduction: Cut the number of animals used to the minimum needed to obtain information.
  • Refinement: Use methods that alleviate or minimize potential pain, suffering, or distress and enhance welfare for the animals used.
